Before we get into Photoshop's most basic concept of layers, let's take a look at some of the various functions used in Photoshop.

Choosing a Resolution

When creating an image, the first thing you need to do is decide what resolution to save. Photoshop usually lets you save images at their default size at 300 dpi (dots per inch) when saving images to the desktop, but you can always go back and resize them at a higher resolution if desired.

You may also notice in the toolbar that Photoshop lets you choose the size of the image (the "size option").

The "size option" allows you to save the image at any size, as long as it's an integer multiple of the first resolution size (300 dpi) and the height and width does not exceed the dimensions of the size.

In other words, if you chose a size of 600 dpi, the image will be 600 dpi at its original size, but if you scale it to an image that's twice as large in both height and width, it will still be 600 dpi. For example, if your image is 1200 dpi by 700 dpi, you would set the size to be 1200 by 700 and save it. The final resolution would be 1200 dpi by 700 dpi.

Although it may sound counterintuitive, this is an important concept to remember. If you save an image with a high resolution, you should only resize the image once, especially if you plan to edit the image.

When resizing images, you may notice the size box allows you to scale to half of the original size.

In fact, you may find it helpful to scale down your images, since larger images can take up quite a bit of space on a hard drive and sending them over a network can use more than the maximum amount of bandwidth.

Scaling a layer down the size, or even setting the size to half of the original size, is also possible, but you need to be careful as some photo editing softwares may not be able to detect a layer that is sized in both directions (half of the original size in both height and width, or double the original size in height and width).

“The range of businesses and products are very exciting, but working across the world and the different time zones presents some challenges,” Garry Allen, CEO of data centre supplier McData, told Computerworld.

“It’s natural when you see a new market like this there is some adjustment to how you run things,” Allen added.

McData confirmed it is looking at the British market with care, but it seems likely some US staff will be allocated to the job, while some UK staff will be redeployed in the US and Canada.

The UK office will work as McData’s European headquarters, but its new European data centre, which opened late last year in a former defence contractor building in Zetland, near Newhaven, is operated by the firm.

Wholesale and retail customers will have contracts for services provided by the company, which ranges from network connectivity, to high performance computing and cloud services, rather than be housed at McData’s Colchester or Maidenhead data centres.

A separate buyer of storage and data services will be the Carphone Warehouse, which recently launched a cloud computing initiative. The retailer is known for closing its massive datacentres at Princes Street in Edinburgh and at Cadbury’s Park Street headquarters in London, where it had 21,500 square feet of data centre space.

A spokeswoman said the firm was considering McData’s proposal. She added: “While we are still assessing McData’s offer, we are impressed by the merits of their proposal and would be looking forward to working with them on the transformation.”

McData said it was extending the talks with Carphone Warehouse. “We are in a constructive and collaborative dialogue with Carphone Warehouse and are certain that the arrangement will be a success for all parties,” said a spokesman.

The move comes amid major changes at the retailer following the departure of Sir Terry Leahy from its chief executive role. Leahy quit on 20 January, but held on to his job as chairman until 28 January to give clarity to the timing of his departure.

Hmmm....how's everybody's walk lately? It's gone good, need to start a new training regimen. I find that if I walk around 3 hours a day, my stamina is at its greatest around 20, 22 miles per day. That's usually before I've eaten lunch. I find that I'm always tired for the rest of the day. If I'm running, I can do it for 4 hours without tiring, and it's usually done in 6, 7 miles, so it seems like I'm an ectomorph.

I think other than walking, I'm still commuting by bike. I love being a bike commuter!

Hi everyone I am new in this board, i am an advanced amateur photographer and have worked with Photoshop CS2 for a year I have tried to learn the logic of the program but I still found it very confusing.

I have a question for all of you. There seems to be as lot of interest in the Mark Herrin case as in the Sierra Photography one. I am really confused as to why. Herrin seems to be in good standing with the community and has been a long time since I have seen him complain about anything. I also wonder if the litigation will make anything more clear in the legalities of Photoshop. I can only speak for myself but I don't see why there is the same interest.

HMM. I guess you are right. I guess there is more interest in the Herrin case because he seems to be getting caught up in the bickering.
