This Photoshop tutorial shows you the basics of converting a scanned image into a digital painting (or painted artwork) in Adobe Photoshop. It goes through the basic steps of how to convert and paint a photo.

Step 1: Open a New Document and Load a Photo

The first step to converting a photo in Photoshop is to open a new document.

Click the New Document icon on the File menu.

Select Photoshop.

Browse to the location where you saved the image you want to paint.

Click Open.

The image should open in Photoshop.

Tip: You can also open the image from the Windows Explorer by clicking the picture icon (i.e. the picture of a little house with four walls, a roof, and a chimney). To open an image from this window, you can click the Open File button and find the image on your hard drive.

The image may be in Windows Photo Viewer, and it's fine to open it there as long as you open the file in Photoshop.

Step 2: Resize the Photo

Next, resize the image, so it is as large as it needs to be. This will be the size of your canvas for the image.

Click the Image menu and select Image Size.

Click the Size drop-down box and make sure that it's set to the height and width you want. Click the OK button to apply the new size.

If the new size isn't large enough, Photoshop may have clipped off a portion of the image, but this is how you want the image to be. If the size is too large for your canvas, make sure that you crop the excess image at the top or bottom, using the Crop tool.

Click the Toolbox button on the far left of the tool bar and click the Crop tool.

Make sure that it's set to Crop.

Click the image and drag the Crop tool to cut off the upper or lower portion of the image.

Step 3: Organize Your Photo for Painting

Use the Free Transform tool to resize the photo so that it's centered.

Click the Free Transform tool.

Click the Size button at the bottom of the tool bar to set the size of the picture. (You don't have to resize it if you've already set it to the correct size.)
