How to get a list of files using a variable?

I'm trying to write a script to create a folder, add some files, and then move them into the folder.
This is what I have so far:
$fname = Read-Host 'Enter filename'
$folder = "C:\temp"

if (!(Test-Path $folder)) { New-Item $folder -ItemType Directory}

Add-Content $folder "test"

Add-Content $folder "test2"

Remove-Item $folder -Recurse -Force

I've been trying to use the result from $fname which is the name of the file to use in New-Item. However, this doesn't work. How can I use the result from $fname and use it to create the path?

When you assign a variable, the variable is not evaluated immediately. It holds a value, but that's it. Only once you hit the = operator is it evaluated. So
$fname = Read-Host 'Enter filename'

assigns $fname a value, but it does not immediately evaluate that value. It will do so only when you hit the = operator. If you simply want to obtain the value of $fname, you must not use the = operator, but e.g. $fname.
Assigning to a variable without the = operator doesn't return the value of $fname. That value is either created by the prompt or discarded, depending on the behavior of Read-Host.
If you want to get the name of a file, you simply access the variable:
$fname

.NET Framework code expects a non-null string to be returned by Read-Host, and it expects a string of as many characters to be present as the prompt. For that reason, Read-Host simply returns a null string, which means that the default value
