2. **Photoshop Elements** Photoshop Elements is a free (though pricey to get) downloadable editing program from Adobe. It is geared toward the beginner level of Photoshop users.

Like Photoshop, Elements uses layers with a raster screen format. Photoshop Elements doesn't require an expensive Windows license, so it's perfect for online users. Elements has the look of the older Photoshop program and many of the features of the full version, and it also includes built-in web-hosting features.

## Getting Photoshop

To run Photoshop, Windows users need to have Windows XP or Vista operating system.

If you're using a Mac, you can run either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Apple offers all the same download options.

# IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LAYERS

Before you can start any image manipulation, you have to make the image you're editing look like what it really is — a raster image (see Figure 3-1). With a raster image, every pixel has a specific color, such as black, red, yellow, or any other color.

If you need to adjust the colors within a raster image, Photoshop enables you to do that, but what you must do first is make that image appear in layers. Layers offer the best way to manipulate and overlay images. When you scan a document, for example, you create a raster image by scanning an object. The object you scan is in one layer; the scanned image is another. With layers, you can easily combine, layer, and edit the image as you see fit — a process called _painting_ the image.

When you paint an image, you create a new layer and then add text, shapes, or any other type of graphic you want to the layer. You can then manipulate the paint layer, as shown in Figure 3-2. After you make any changes to the paint layer, you simply use the Eraser tool and delete the layer if you like what you've done.

There are many free programs that do similar or all the same things, but Photoshop Elements is the only free and fully-featured alternative to Photoshop for those who need basic image editing.

If you need a professional editing suite, Photoshop is the tool of choice.

Adobe Photoshop’s Advanced Features

Adobe Photoshop has many advanced features, many of which are truly essential for those editing images professionally. However, these are much less familiar to users of Elements, especially the more complicated features.

Hand tool

Photoshop has a freehand tool, Hand, that lets you draw in the edges of images and shape them exactly the way you want. If you know where you want a line or a shape to be in the middle of an image, Hand tool is the easiest way to draw that perfect shape. It’s a great tool for adding things like moustaches, fingers and hearts.

To use Hand tool, click on the rectangle in the toolbox to make it visible and then draw a shape over an area of the photo. The shape you draw will be inside the photo.

If you can’t find the shape you want to use, you can add one and use the Rectangle tool to edit that shape. To use the Rectangle tool, click on the selection icon and the Rectangle Tool will appear.

If you want to edit a selection while using the tool, click on the square selection icon and select Edit Selection as a square. Or, if you have an ellipsis selection tool, choose Edit Selection as Ellipse.

Image Trace

For those editing large photos or images, Image Trace can be very helpful. Image Trace is a feature in Photoshop that lets you trace a path around an area of an image. If you have an outline of a shape, you can trace around it using the Image Trace feature in Photoshop. That way, you can re-use that shape as a mask in other places in the photo.

To use Image Trace, open the image that you want to use a trace path on. Click on the rectangle in the toolbox to make it visible and then draw a path around the area you want to trace.

Neural correlates of the impairments of routine and reversal learning in patients with schizophrenia: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness. Patients with schizophrenia have a reduced ability to learn from negative feedback. The deficit is more serious in reversal learning (RL) than in routine learning (RL). The question of whether these deficits are associated with the dysfunction of brain regions was examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Twenty-six schizophrenia patients and 22 healthy controls were asked to perform the RL and RL-routine learning (RRL) tasks. The results showed that participants with schizophrenia exhibited a lower accuracy for RL than for RL-routine learning (pRL>RL-RL), precuneus (R>RL>RL-RL), putamen (R>RL>RL-RL), and anterior cingulate cortex (R>RL>RL-RL).
