The different ways you can open your files for editing include opening them in Photoshop, opening them in Photoshop Elements, and opening them in Bridge. Because you are more likely to open your images in Photoshop for editing (more about that in the "Finding what you're looking for" sidebar later in this chapter), the rest of this chapter describes how to open files for Photoshop editing.

You can work with Photoshop and other Adobe programs simultaneously. For example, you may use Photoshop to open and edit a photo, then open a separate file in Photoshop Elements and correct the problems there. To read more about using multiple programs at the same time, turn to Book III, Chapter 3.

Finding What You're Looking For

Of all the ways you can open a file for editing, probably the best way is to find that file in your computer's storage area. For example, if you click File⇒Open, Photoshop opens the current image file. To find an image file, you can open the file-finder window, which displays thumbnails of all your files.

Beware! Here are a few of the pitfalls in opening a file:

I usually create a folder to store my images, so I can locate them quickly. Even if you do not create a folder, you can still find files in the image folder. But if you do create a folder, the files are stored in a subfolder of that folder. For example, if you saved your image in `C:\My Images\MyFirstImage.psd`, you would find it at `C:\My Images\MyFirstImage\MyFirstImage.psd`.

Be careful when opening files in Photoshop. The image may open on a new layer that doesn't contain your image, the layer may be flattened (`Moved to Layer 0`) and may not contain your image, or the image may have a mask that you may not want to edit. If you're concerned, turn the file into a Smart Object, choose Layer 0 from the Layers panel, and then make sure the file appears on that layer.

Working with Images in Your Computer

You can open a file from within your computer, from your hard drive, from a Web site, or from a Flash drive. If you want to open a file from a Web site, do one of the following:

If you want to install Photoshop Elements on your Mac, it’s similar to Windows, but you will have to do some extra steps to make sure you can log in to your Photoshop Elements account when you’re logged into your Mac. 1. Unzip the setup file

Download the Photoshop Elements (download link)

You should unzip the downloaded file before installing. Don’t be confused that it is 7zip archive. Unzipping is a process in which the file is split into separate files, from which it makes it easier to move and use.

Double-click the “.7z” file and it will automatically extract the folder.

Note that the file must be fully extracted to a certain folder in order for the program to work.

If you have any problem with this process, please restart your computer and try again.

2. Start installing Photoshop Elements

If you see the previous message:

“Windows has detected an unauthorised software in this folder. It could harm your computer. Do you want to allow this software to run?”

Then, accept the default option to run Photoshop Elements.

If you don’t see that message, try to restart your computer.

Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to detect a cemented tibial plateau fracture.
Fracture of the tibial plateau is a rare and potentially devastating complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Identification of this rare complication in the setting of critical soft tissue structures can be difficult. Prompt recognition and appropriate treatment can prevent amputation, yet often results in poor patient outcomes. This case report describes the use of intraoperative ultrasound to identify a cemented tibial plateau fracture intraoperatively. This was a 55-year-old man who had undergone left knee replacement with intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) during the procedure. He was taken to the OR 8 days after the initial procedure with complaints of knee swelling, pain, and difficulty with ambulation. Radiographs were not helpful in identifying a possible fracture. The IOUS performed during the second surgery identified a proximal medial cemented tibial plateau fracture. The two-part fracture could be identified and adequately addressed. The femoral component was revised with a spherical femoral component, and the tibial component was revised with a modular set of tibial components. The patient recovered uneventfully and was able to walk 6 weeks later. Intraoperative ultrasound has been shown to be useful in the evaluation of intra-articular and peri-articular pathologies. The use of IOUS during TKA procedures to identify possible complications, such as tibial plateau fractures, is a viable and attractive method of intraoperative evaluation. With a simple tip, your smartphone can guide you through the care and treatment of an incurable sexually transmitted infection, researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine say.

At least 1 million cases of chlamydia occur in the United States each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial infections in the United States. It's usually treated with antibiotics, but at times, patients may need to take multiple courses of medicine over time, the researchers explained.

Up to 40 percent of people infected with chlamydia have no symptoms and are unaware that they may have been infected, they write.

The new research found that smartphones and smartphones apps can help patients self-diagnose, track the progress of treatment and know when to seek medical care. The smartphone program has been developed to diagnose, treat and manage chlamydia in a safe, effective way, but it can also be used for other bacterial and viral infections, the study authors wrote in the report published in the journal mHealth.

"We are excited about this because technology can greatly improve quality of life for patients diagnosed with chlamydia," study author Dr. Jon Sanders said in a university news release. Sanders is the chief medical officer at Vela Health, an organization that offers an app for physicians to send "personalized, detailed reports to their patients' smartphones to provide actionable patient data and improve outcomes."

With the smartphone app, patients enter their age, symptoms and answers to questions, and Vela Health then uses this information to suggest a course of action that may include testing and treatment, the researchers said.

"It's the first smartphone app we know of that uses cognitive testing and behavioral observation to help create a treatment plan that works for the patient -- it's individualized, not one-size-fits-all," Sanders said.

The new smartphone app is not only a way to track the disease, but it can also be used to determine whether patients have lingering side effects from antibiotics, which is another advantage to this kind of program, the researchers explained.
