1.1. Getting started

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a program designed to help you see your images onscreen. It provides four tools: Create, Edit, Print and Share.



Touch the Start button at the bottom of the screen and select Create or Edit.

1.2. Using the Create feature

The Create menu lets you choose among a number of tools for making your own photos and graphics:



The Create tool creates an object (e.g., a photo) or lets you preview and manage pictures of any size or format (e.g., a JPEG, a PNG, a TIFF, a PDF, a GIF, an HD video and RAW files).

The title bar of the Create tool shows the type of object that you are creating. For example, you can create a photo or a painting, and it will open in the Elements App.

Press the N key or click the downward-pointing arrow to show your photos.

Touch the crop area (the white area in the center of the screen) to see it in full-screen mode.

Touch the right corner of the screen to fill the entire screen.

You can import a photo into Elements using the Custom option in the Image Size options:

When Josh Ritter first released his 2009 album The Cronin & Collins Sessions, songs like "Burn Up" showed him to be one of the brightest lights in Americana. Since then, he has made four more albums, and his latest is one of the finest and most ambitious yet. The Greatest Gift is a record that's about the joy of making music and the value of having it in your life.

You can hear these themes throughout the album, and the most obvious starting point is "Mortise and Pawn," a song that offers a sonorous portrait of Ritter's musical ideals, with an unusual sense of restraint on his part. "Is there a chance it'll be a perfect song," he muses, "the one perfect piece / That comes out the whole time / Every time I write and sing?"

On some level, it's weird to think of this as a "song." It sounds more like a collection of pieces, all distinct and unified. And that's part of the point. The Greatest Gift is an album that sings, but it can only sing if it's a cacophony of sound and ideas and stories and musical styles — a seeming impossibility, but the one thing that Ritter makes that is perfect.

What Ritter achieves here is to take advantage of the new technologies that allow him to do so much more than anybody else. A live recording from the Scottish Barrowlands festival in March 2009, this album has a striking richness that earlier albums didn't have. The strings and horns that adorn the songs, the way Ritter's guitar never sounds like any other guitar on the album — these are all elements that the technology allowed for, and Ritter has paid attention to them. "A bedroom recording, for home, is a very different feeling than when I'm recording in a much more low-fi, crummy feeling space," Ritter says. "That makes a huge difference in what kind of sounds can come through."

Ritter didn't start out thinking about a concept album. But given the wonderful sonic richness of his music, the concept of a record about music and family feels absolutely essential. "It's very easy to sink into the practice or the craft of music to the detriment of what's going on in your life," he says.
